The Palisades Porpoises are looking forward to an exciting 2013 swim team season under head coach Gerri Diamond, who will be assisted by coaches Callie Fosburgh and Catherine Gregory. The team will compete inDivision H with dual A-meets against Ashton, Chevy Chase Rec Association, North Chevy Chase, North Creek, and Regency Estates. We will also compete against our neighboring pools on Wednesday evenings with "B" meets scheduled with Bannockburn, Little Falls, Merrimack, and Mohican. There is a place on the swim team for every pool family with children ages 5 to 18. Suits The team swim suit is Speedo Vortex Pro and available for purchase at Capital Sport and Swim. 10558 Metropolitan Ave, Kensington, (301) 949-7366. They have plenty of suits in stock. Aardvark in Rockville is not carrying our swim suit this season. Pre-Team The Palisades Pre-team is designed for swimmers who will be five years old before June 1, are confident in the water, and are seeking to master the four strokes in preparation for joining the swim team’s regular practices. To join the Pre-team, children must be able to comfortably make their way across the diving well (floating, swimming, or kicking with a board) unassisted and without showing signs of distress (such as crying or refusing to get in the water). Children interested in joining the Pre-team should have already mastered the following basic swim skills: blowing bubbles, kicking on the wall, kicking with kick board with face in water, have knowledge of the freestyle stroke and be comfortable and confident being in water over 5 feet in depth. The Pre-team will practice in the diving well and in the middle pool, which tends to be at a cooler temperature than the main swim pool. Swimmers will need to demonstrate they have the skills to be on the Pre-team. If they are not yet at this level, we will encourage your child to receive lessons from other programs or private lessons taught by the swim coaches and lifeguards and rejoin the Pre-team once their confidence meets the expected criteria. The Pre-team is coached by the swim team coaches, including Head Coach Gerri Diamond, Assistant Head Coach Callie Fosburgh, Assistant Coach Catherine Gregory, and middle and high school student volunteers from the swim team. The coaches focus on developing skills that will help pre-team swimmers to eventually join the Palisades team regular practices as soon as they have acquired enough skills -- much like a farm baseball team is training ground for their parent major league team. Every member of the Palisades Pre-team must register as a swim team member and pay the registration fee. As team members, Pre-team swimmers are eligible to swim in the team meets, usually beginning with the 25 yard freestyle in Wednesday B-meets. The goal is to have most Pre- team swimmers participating in meets and ready to move to the regular team practices by the end of the season. All Pre-team swimmers are encouraged to participate in team social events and pep rallies during the season, the team photograph and the end of year banquet. They are also encouraged to swim in a special event, the Celine Silver Memorial Mini Meet at Tilden Woods Pool in July. Practice We kick off practices over Memorial Day weekend with practices all three days from 9 - 10:30 am for all ages (no developmental team). Afternoon practices for all ages and developmental team start Tuesday, May 28. Morning practices will start once Montgomery County Public Schools are out. The details are under the link to the calendar above. Swimmers should come prepared for all practices with swimsuit, cap, goggles, and water bottle. See you on deck! | Mailing List Parent Volunteer Officials If you are interested in learning to be a swim official, you can attend one of the clinics offered by the league for certification as a Stroke and Turn Judge or Starter. The meets cannot run without these deck officials. Certifying as an official is a great way to support our young athletes and Porpoise swimming!
